News from TBC president

Apologies for not getting this out sooner but this is a hectic time of year what with two tournaments and my own umpiring duties to attend to.
In any case we had 19 members in attendance for the Annual meeting which was held at the Hibachi Super Buffet.  Everyone liked the room and the food which helped me to confirm my decision to host the AZ Senior Olympics dinner there.
Votes were counted for the officers and we had 28 votes for and none against:
President: Richard Alexander
Vice president: Cho Lik Chan
Secretary: Jean Cary
Treasurer: Marylee Pangman
Sunshine Coordinator: Jean Cary
We also had a vote to allow ballots to be cast by email.  The vote was 25 for and 2 against.  The by laws will now be amended to allow members who cannot be present at a meeting to cast votes either by emailing their vote to bdmntncluboftucson(a)gmail.com replace (a) with @ or by submitting them in a sealed envelope as before.  Emailed votes will be printed as .pdf documents and counted with the other ballots.
I recounted our activities in 2012 which included:
  • Hosting the USA Badminton Senior Nationals
  • Luncheon and games at Georgia Keefer’s
  • Fun event at Udall (which added some new members)
  • Securing new courts at the Southern Arizona Indoor Sport center at Curtis Park
  • We also agreed to apply for the 2014 and 2016 USAB Senior Nationals (currently under way).
Liz Betts asked that I mentioned that players are needed at the NW YMCA on Thursdays 2-4PM.
I noted that we curently have 71 members and it looks like we will add a few more this year.

Arizona Senior Olympics Banquet

arizona senior olympicsIf you are going to attend the AZ Sr. Olympics Badminton Tournament on March 2nd and 3rd 2013, please note that we are going to have our banquet 6:30PM Saturday evening at:

Hibachi Super Buffet
4629 E Speedway Blvd.
(NW corner of Speedway and Swan)

Hibachi Super Buffet is an upscale Asian/Hibachi buffet restaurant with a new modern look. We will have our own private room and their selection of food is remarkable with over 250 items prepared fresh every day. They have oysters, whole fish, salmon, shrimp (coconut and bacon wrapped to name just two), pork, beef and chicken dishes and a full Mongolian style buffet where you pick out your food and have it cooked to order. There are lots of vegetables and fresh fruit and many choices of deserts. We held the TBC annual meeting there just last week and everyone came away impressed. Soft drinks are included and it’s all inclusive for $14.00. Of course alcoholic beverages are available at additional charge.

Please email me  bdmntncluboftucson(a)gmail.com  for the address to send your checks to:

Tucson senior olympics lunch deal

arizona senior olympicsThis is a reminder for those of you who are participating in the Tucson Senior Olympics and/or the Arizona State Senior Olympics Badminton Tournaments.
Once again lunch is being offered for both days of either tournament for a one time charge of $5.00.  Pat Stinson is collecting the money for this so please have an extra five or ten on you for her.

Happy New Year, TBC administration announcements

With the start of the New Year we are once again collecting dues of $5.00. Many of you have paid already and, yes I know you can hold out until the end of February but if you see Pat Stinson, Mark Anderson or Richard Alexander you can take care of that now and get it out of the way.

The annual meeting this year will take place on Friday February 1, as you may remember we changed the bylaws so that the meeting could be held on any date in the first week of that month. Part of the reason was so that we could hold the meeting in the evening (Wednesday night was no a great night to go out) to accommodate more members.
The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers for next year. Jean Cary, Cholik Chan and myself are running again for Secretary, Vice President and President respectively and MaryLee Pangman is running for Treasurer as Mark Anderson is stepping down. Also we will be taking a vote to approve a modification to the bylaws to allow voting by email. Pat Stinson and I will have ballots and of course they will be available at the meeting.

The meeting will be held at 6:00PM at the Hibachi Super Buffet in the shopping center on the northwest side of Speedway and Swan. This is an all you can eat restaurant with everything from typical Chinese to Italian, Mexican, Japanese and American entrees. The is no problem for vegetarians or for those prefer fish as this place has it all and of course lots of deserts to choose from. And it’s only $9.99 per person. Now, you do not have to eat there but obviously their management would appreciate it if you did so if you would please get back to me in the next couple of weeks and let me know if you are coming I would be most grateful (yes, you can bring you spouses or significant others).

Thanks, Richard Alexander (president TBC)

Opening times during the holiday season

Udall Rec center will be closed Tuesday December 25 and Tuesday January 1.

Randolph Rec Center will be open Monday December 24 and Monday December 31 until 2PM so there will be open play on those two days.

For players playing at the University, be aware that there will be no more badminton after today (December 14) until the new Spring semester. However you can still play at the Morris K Udall and Randolph recreation centers.

A reminder for people who are not University of Arizona students and who wish to play at there: don’t forget to write to the Badminton president as soon as possible and ask to be considered for a pass to play! This will allow you to play on Friday evening and Sunday mornings: uazbadminton(at)gmail.com
