Dear USA Badminton Member,
Welcome Springtime! Great news, USA Badminton reached its goal to receive the matching funds from the USOC Challenge Grant for 2012!
For 2013 we have a new challenge. The USOC Challenge Grant is for $35,000, but in order to receive the matching funds, we need to raise $35,000. Your help is needed in this campaign as our goal is to raise $65,000 by December 31, 2013 so that we can help prepare those athletes whose dream is to participate in the 2016 Olympics in Rio and that we have players who will be able to play in each discipline.
Our sincere thanks to those of you who so generously contributed in 2012. All 2012 Donors are posted on  the website.
Gifts will be directed to USAB’s area of greatest need, but you can also select an area for your gift to be directed.
  • Elite Athletes
  • Juniors (Junior Worlds, Junior Pan Ams, World University Games)
  • Seniors (Trophies)

curtis park news

Yesterday Paul Jones and I visited the new facility going up at Curtis Park (http://goo.gl/maps/O8Yc5).

Unfortunately we left with as many if not more questions than we had when we arrived. The wood flooring was being installed so we could not tell where the dedicated badminton courts will be and more importantly how they will line up under the lights and air conditioning. The ceiling height looks good with the only obstructions being the lights which hang down from it.

There are some negatives: They have painted the upper part of the walls white, it looks like sun coming through the windows might be an issue and for some reason they decided not to put in locker rooms and showers.

I will have discussions later today about possible playing times and fees.

Again, it’s too early to come to any conclusions but I wanted you all to know that we’re watching and working to make this facility another place to play.

It will be on Wednesday May 1st, 6:30pm, at Hibachi Super Buffet on Speedway and Swan. Our departing VIPs are: Zow (me!), Monica Xiong, Alex Tao, and Stephanie Tsang. Let me know soon if you would like to go but need a ride. Also let me know if you’re planning on leaving Tucson soon, and you can be a VIP as well!

3) Summer hours: Normal hours, but the rec closes at 10pm on Fridays: Fridays 6pm-10pm, Sundays 10am-1pm.

4) Non-student pass: If you need one for the summer, email me. The summer is divided into Summer 1 and Summer 2 (I think Summer 1 ends in early July, not sure of exact date), each for $25, or both for $50. If you only want one, make sure to tell them when you’re purchasing your pass.

5) Grand Canyon State Games: Still some time away, but the GCSG will take place on Saturday June 22nd this year at the Arizona Badminton Center. There will be singles, men’s, women’s, and mixed. If you’re interested, find a partner and practice now!

News from TBC president

Apologies for not getting this out sooner but this is a hectic time of year what with two tournaments and my own umpiring duties to attend to.
In any case we had 19 members in attendance for the Annual meeting which was held at the Hibachi Super Buffet.  Everyone liked the room and the food which helped me to confirm my decision to host the AZ Senior Olympics dinner there.
Votes were counted for the officers and we had 28 votes for and none against:
President: Richard Alexander
Vice president: Cho Lik Chan
Secretary: Jean Cary
Treasurer: Marylee Pangman
Sunshine Coordinator: Jean Cary
We also had a vote to allow ballots to be cast by email.  The vote was 25 for and 2 against.  The by laws will now be amended to allow members who cannot be present at a meeting to cast votes either by emailing their vote to bdmntncluboftucson(a)gmail.com replace (a) with @ or by submitting them in a sealed envelope as before.  Emailed votes will be printed as .pdf documents and counted with the other ballots.
I recounted our activities in 2012 which included:
  • Hosting the USA Badminton Senior Nationals
  • Luncheon and games at Georgia Keefer’s
  • Fun event at Udall (which added some new members)
  • Securing new courts at the Southern Arizona Indoor Sport center at Curtis Park
  • We also agreed to apply for the 2014 and 2016 USAB Senior Nationals (currently under way).
Liz Betts asked that I mentioned that players are needed at the NW YMCA on Thursdays 2-4PM.
I noted that we curently have 71 members and it looks like we will add a few more this year.

Thanks to everyone who made this a successful event and many congratulations to all who participated and to the winners!

UA closure – no badminton

Unfortunately, there will be a basketball tournament all this weekend
(Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) in both the North and South Gym, so we
will not have any space or time to play.  Sorry for the relatively
short notice.  Now go out and have a life outside badminton.

Also, sign up for our tournament on 3/23!!  A reminder that it is
round-robin, so there are at least 3 games guaranteed, plus
snacks/fruit/Gatorade/shuttles/lunch will all be provided with the
fee.  Go to our website at www.uazbadminton.com for more info or to
find the registration form.

Cheers,
Zow
